Editorial overview: Lymphocyte activation and effector functions
Abstract
Lymphocyte activation requires the integration of signals provided by the extracellular environment in the form of cell-like interactions and soluble factors, mainly cytokines. Engagement of specific receptors by these ligands trigger myriad signaling pathways that induce expression and/or activation of transcription factors that ultimately function to modulate gene expression, thereby imprinting the cell with a particular effector cell fate.
